Nigerian Police Sued Over Journalist's Incarceration
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) said it has
sued the country's Department of State Security to a Federal High Court
over what it considered "unlawful detention" of a local journalist.
The secret police was accused of wrongful arrest and detention of Friday Ogungbemi, a local journalist based in Lokoja, capital of central Nigeria's state of Kogi, since Nov. 30.
The journalist was taken into custody by the secret police for allegedly publishing an offensive report in an edition of the local Policy and Lawmakers magazine.
The journalists' union is seeking the enforcement of the local journalist's fundamental human rights and cash compensation for his incarceration, according to a statement reaching Xinhua on Wednesday.
The union's counsel, who filed a motion on notice Tuesday, said the journalist's rights to personal liberty, freedom of movement and fair hearing had been violated by the secret police, and thereby urged the court to enforce the rights being infringed upon.
The secret police is yet to respond to the claims.
