Driver Sentenced To 3 Years Imprisonment For Drug Trafficking
A Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday sentenced a 31-year-old driver, Adesanya Fatai, to three years imprisonment for trafficking in marijuana.
The driver had pleaded guilty to a count charge preferred against him by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
Following the plea, the court reviewed the facts of the case as presented by the prosecutor, Mr Jeremiah Aernan.Aernan tendered in evidence, a written statement of the accused, a request for scientific aid form, a drug analysis form, a forensic analysis form and the bulk of drug.
Justice Chuka Obiozor admitted these as exhibits, and found the accused guilty as charged.
The judge held that the sentence should run from the date of the driver’s arrest.
The NDLEA had submitted that the driver committed the offence on Dec. 1, 2016.
The agency said that he was arrested on a tipoff on Ring Road in Agege, Lagos, with 900g of the banned substance.
It added that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 11 (c) of the NDLEA Act, 2004.
Defence counsel, Mrs Oreofe Ogunleye, had prayed the court to temper justice with mercy.
She said that the driver had no past criminal record and would repent.
