Lagos Building Collapse: LASEMA to End Search Today and Release Casualty Figures

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has announced that search for more victims in the collapsed three-story building at Ita Faji, Lagos Island will end today.

Adesina Tiamiyu, the General Manager of the agency revealed this in a statement released Thursday morning after rescuing over fifty people from the rubble of the collapsed structure.

Tiamiyu lauded the tremendous effort put in by the youth of the community, who rose to the challenge before the rescue team came in and commenced saving trapped victims.

The General Manager noted that on arrival at the scene of the incident, his personnel promptly increased the pace and rescued many more lives. Unfortunately, it could not save everyone as it discovered that some were already dead while clearing away the rubble.

The building is a residential apartment that housed a school on the top floor with pupils being the most affected.

According to Tiamiyu, as at the time the search ended, a lady complained about looking for her child but community members insisted her daughter was seen among the rescued and she had been directed to Lagos Island Government Hospital.

While also appreciating the support of Nigerians from walks of life and most importantly foreign missions who called in to offer support and relief in any way needed, he said issues of crowd control on the scene have been noted and in similar situations, it plans to use this experience to do better.
